Manchester City have agreed a €90m (£77m) fee with RB Leipzig for Croatia defender Josko Guardiola.

The 21-year-old's arrangement does not include add-ons, meaning the £80million Manchester United paid Leicester City for Harry Maguire in 2019 remains the English record for the safety.

Since signing from Dynamo Zagreb in 2021, he has played 87 games for Leipzig and has been a key player.

It is normal that Guardiola will go to the UK for a clinical longer than now.

The arrangement looked unlikely to be agreed last week when Leipzig demanded they would not sell for less than €100m (£86m).

With Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake also able to fill the position, Pep Guardiola believes Guardiola will strengthen the left side of his central defence. His arrival could put Emerick Laporte's future at the Etihad Stadium under scrutiny.

Guardiola, who is similarly willing to play at left-back, turned into City's main mid-year signing after the £25million arrival of individual Croatian Mateo Kovac from Chelsea in June.

Kovacic will effectively replace City captain Ilkay Gundogan in midfield after the captain left for Barcelona on a free last season. Meanwhile, winger Riyad Mahrez left for Saudi Arabia's Al Ahly last week for £30million.

Guardiola, who has made 21 appearances and scored twice for Croatia, helped his side finish third at the 2022 World Cup and finish second behind Spain in this year's Nations League.

He brought home back-to-back championships with Zagreb, closing out the double with an association and cup before taking action in the Bundesli
ga.

During Guardiol's time in Germany, Leipzig also finished fourth and third in the Bundesliga, helping them reach the Champions League twice.

The club that sold him was actually kicked out of the Boss Association twice by the club he now joins.

Leipzig finished third in City's best-ever grouping in 2021-22 and lost 8-1 over two legs in last season's round of 16, including a 7-0 drubbing at the Etihad.
